Mark Jones Technical Leader The Dow Chemical Company Basic Plastics and Chemicals R&D / Hydrocarbons and Energy R&D / Licensing R&D
Mark Jones is a Technical Leader at The Dow Chemical Company. In his current role, Mark has broad leadership responsibilities across Chemicals and Hydrocarbons R&D. Mark joined Dow in 1990 following a graduate career that had very little to do with his ultimate career path. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, Mark got his Ph.D. with Barney Ellison at the University of Colorado-Boulder studying gas-phase ion molecule chemistry - not an area of great industrial interest. Mark was introduced to catalysis during a post-doc with Bruce Koel, then at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Science in Boulder. Mark joined Dow in 1990 on the Research Assignments Program. In 1991, he moved into the Heterogeneous Catalysis group in what was then Central Research. That group became part of Core R&D - Chemical Sciences, which is where Mark spent much of his career. Mark's work has been primarily in the area of oxidation catalysis. Projects have included production of dimethyl carbonate via oxidative carbonylation, selective hydrogenation of chlorocarbons, hydrogen production for portable fuel cell applications, and vinyl chloride production from ethane. More recently Mark has participated in developing alternative feedstock options based on both fossil and renewable feedstocks. In February 2006, Mark joined Basic Plastics and Chemicals / Hydrocarbons and Energy R&D. Mark is the author of over 14 issued U.S. and European patents.
