Tim Appenzeller

Tim Appenzeller

National Geographic

Tim Appenzeller, assistant executive editor of National Geographic, often writes and edits stories on energy and the environment. He won last year's Walter Sullivan Award for Excellence in Science Journalism from the American Geophysical Union for his National Geographic article "The Case of the Missing Carbon" (February, 2004) on the global carbon cycle and greenhouse warming, and he has also written for the magazine about clean coal and global oil resources. He has roamed throughout science and technology during more than 20 years as an editor and writer for publications including Time-Life Books, Scientific American, The Sciences, Science, and most recently, U.S. News and World Report. During the first four of his eight years at Science, he edited and wrote news stories on Earth science, astronomy, and physics. Later he was responsible for coordinating Science's news and features on both biology and physical sciences. At U.S. News he edited the magazine's health and medicine coverage and then its science section. By background he is an English major who became fascinated with science and how it shapes our lives and minds.
