Dr. Nakamura was awarded the 2006 Millennium Technology Prize for his invention of revolutionary new light sources: blue, green, and white light-emitting diodes and the blue laser diode. The award is presented by Finland's Millennium Prize Foundation and recognizes outstanding technological achievement aimed at promoting quality of life and sustainable development.

Chuck McDermott has worked in the energy and environmental field for more than twenty years. Prior to his role forming RockPort’s merchant bank and venture fund, McDermott served as Vice President and officer of Waste Management, Inc., the world’s largest environmental services company, and was responsible for the company’s federal advocacy before the White House, U.S. Congress, and other federal agencies. He also directed all political, constituent, and legislative matters in his role as Chief of Staff for Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy II. As Manager of Project Development for Citizens Energy Corporation, Mr. McDermott helped pioneer the creation of the nation's first bulk electric power trading company.
He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Cerox Corporation and Renaissance Lighting. He is also a Member of the Board of Directors and President of the CEO Coalition to Advance Sustainable Technologies and a Member of the Board of Governors of the National Association of Small Business Investment Companies. Mr. McDermott is a board advisor to the Cleantech Venture Network, Chairman of the Gridwise Alliance and Board Member of the Flax Trust, a business incubator in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Alan Heeger Professor of Physics University of California, Santa Barbara
Dr. Alan Heeger’s role in the revolutionary discovery that plastics can have the properties of metals and semiconductors earned him the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. This discovery launched an important new field of research in plastics properties, widely used in solar technology. In addition to being the recipient of the Nobel Prize, Dr. Heeger has received numerous national and international awards. In 2003, Dr. Heeger was named to a University of California Presidential Chair, an honor that is reserved for the institution's most distinguished scholars.
Joe Powell Chief Scientist – Chemical Engineering Shell Global Solutions
Joe Powell leads major research and development programs directed toward chemicals, biofuels, CO2 capture, and enhanced oil recovery for the Chemical Development Department at Shell’s Westhollow Technology Center (Houston). These programs have included new technology for the production of Bisphenol-A, and innovation and commercialization of a process route to1,3-Propanediol.
Dr. Powell has been granted 39 U.S. patents and several industry awards, including the Arthur Dehon Little Award for Chemical Engineering Innovation (AIChE 1998), R&D100 Award (R&D Magazine), and American Chemical Society Team Innovation Award (2000). He is a life member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and currently serves as chair for Area 12B (Pilot Plants) of the Process Development Division.
Dr. William J. Mitchell Professor of Architecture and Media Arts and Sciences MIT
Dr. William J. Mitchell sits as chair of the National Academies Committee on Information Technology and Creativity. Mitchell was awarded the Architectural Institute of Japan’s 1997 Appreciation Prize for his "achievements in the development of architectural design theory in the information age as well as worldwide promotion of CAD education."
Mitchell is MIT’s former Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning and Head of the Program in Media Arts and Sciences. Prior to his time at MIT, he was the G. Ware and Edythe M. Travelstead Professor of Architecture and Director of the Master in Design Studies Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He also served as Head of the Architecture/Urban Design Program at UCLA's Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning, and has taught at Yale, Carnegie-Mellon, and Cambridge Universities. In addition, he is also the recipient of honorary doctorates from the University of Melbourne and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Doug Newman Director National Energy Center for Sustainable Communities (NECSC)
Doug Newman has 25 years of experience in national environmental policy analysis and program development and in planning and managing collaborative research initiatives.
Prior to the formation of the NECSC, he served as the Director of community energy systems research for the Gas Technology Institute and served in a number of senior career posts in the U.S. government, and as a private-sector business consultant and entrepreneur. His commercial clients included Discovery Communications (the Discovery Channel Network), General Electric, GeoSpehere, Pratt & Whitney-Canada, Samsonite-American Tourister, SES-ASTRA and the U.S. Department of Commerce - National Ocean Service.
