Van de Walle, Professor of Computational Materials and Faculty in Solid State Lighting and Energy Center (SSLEC), UC Santa Barbara View Presentation The SSLEC is developing novel technologies to achieve an efficiency target of 200 lumens/Watt (60%). The U.S. Department of Energy estimates over $98 billion in energy savings could be realized by 2020 if solid state lighting can achieve these breakthrough efficiency targets. The three-story sphere features true 3D 360-degree projection of a multicenter hydrogen bond; researchers interactively examine and “fly” through the giant bond in this immersive environment.
